Nuwara Eliya and the World's End

The World’s End in Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya and the World’s End

After climbing Adam’s Peak, it was time to head to Nuwara Eliya, the next stop before going to Ella, and famous (like all its area in Sri Lanka) for the Tea plantations and the World’s End. From here you can get the famous Ella train in its most beautiful tram.
But this is also the closest place to visit the Horton Plains National Park, where you will be able to reach “The End of the World“.

If you come from climbing Adam’s Peak, you will need to take the bus back to Hatton and get to the Bus Stand, from where you will be able to catch the bus that goes to Ella and make a stop in Nuwara Eliya to spend a few days.

Where to stay in Nuwara Eliya

The best area to stay is without a doubt, close to the city center. You should find a place in this area so that you can go walking to the most common places in the city.

Sleeping in Nuwara Eliya

TIP: One of the best areas to sleep in town is around Victoria Park, very close to the city center and close to the restaurants. This is where I booked the hostel: New Tour Inn which is not very far from the Gregory Lake and it’s just 2 km from Pidruthalagala mountain. I totally recommend it as I was able to book the tuk tuk to visit The Horton Plains.
Another recommended hostel with high rated reviews is the Fairy Hostel, also located in the city centre.

What to do in Nuwara Eliya

Tea Plantations

This is a popular activity in Nuwara Eliya, so you can ask in your hostel for tours. You can arrange a tuk-tuk guide that will take you to some tea plantations. You should normally pay Rs 1500 to Rs2000 for the tuk-tuk driver and the tea plantations (and tasting) are free.

Gregory Lake & Send a postcard from the Post Office

You can spend a quiet evening walking around Gregory lake and the close neighborhood also known as “Little England”. This is also a charming area for a walk where you will find colonial houses and the Nuwara Eliya Post Office, which is an antique Tudor Manor that was built in 1894. It is also one of the oldest post offices in Sri Lanka. Definitely worth a visit.

Horton Plains National Park

One of the best activities to do in Nuwara Eliya is to spend one day in this National Park. Situated 40km further down south, the Horton Plains National Park includes the infamous hiking to the “World’s End”. You shouldn’t miss it if you like hiking, as the trails to the World’s End and the views are amazing.

You can find these spots in the Park:

  • The World’s End Nuwara Eliya

This is one of the main trails in the Park. This is not a very difficult trek, and what you can find is a drop-off at the edge of the cliff. Beautiful!

  • Mini World’s End Nuwara Eliya

This is an “easy” 5Km walk (2,5km go + 2,5km return). Walking in the Horton Plains National Park is just amazing because of the scenery of nature and the animals you will meet along the way. We were greeted by beautiful deers all around the Park. You will also enjoy a breath-taking view from the top of the hill.

  • Baker’s Fall

There is also an alternate trek inside the Park to see these beautiful waterfalls. Don’t worry! You can do all these 3 main hikes in half-day, as you will arrive early in the morning. The height of Baker’s waterfalls is 20 meters. You can see many Fern bushes and Rhododendron around the waterfall.

Tips to visit the Park

TIP: Book your tuk-tuk ride to go there early in the morning. The ticket office opens at 08h and the queue is a little bit slow, try to have your money and passport ready, and be one of the first people in the queue.

TIP: Bring your LifeStraw Go Water Bottle with you to be hydrated during the trekkings.

TIP: Try to go first to the World’s End, because once on the top, there will be a lot of people just to take the famous picture and have their Instagram hype moment

TIP: Do this activity in your last day, after the checkout in the Hostel. Bring your Backpack with you and when you finish your visit tell the driver to bring you to the Pattipola train station.

From Nuwara Eliya to Ella (Best Train ride ever)

This is an absolute must train ride you need to take to go to Ella.

If you are coming from the Horton Plains National Park, ask your tuk-tuk driver to hop you off at the Pattipola train station, which is the highest located railway station in Sri Lanka at 1.891 metres above the sea level.

If you go directly from Nuwara Eliya, you need to head to Nanu Oya station, which is located around 8km from the centre of town. I think that the last train is at 15:55h. Check the train schedules accessing Sri Lanka railways official website
