After the visit to Dambulla and the incredible Cave Temple, it was time to head to Kandy, a big city which would become the starting place to get the famous train to Ella, one of the best train rides in the world.

From Dambulla to Kandy
If you are in Dambulla, the fastest and cheapest way to get to Kandy is to take a bus. There are so many buses going to Kandy as it is one of the biggest and most important cities in Sri Lanka.
Where to stay in Kandy
The best area to stay is without doubt, close to the city centre. You should find a place in this area so that you can go walking to the most common places in the city.
TIP: Near the city center I booked this capsule hostel because the location was amazing and it was one of the cheapest options. Clock Inn Kandy. At the time of booking it was including the breakfast. Totally recommended!
Kandy City Highlights
The city itself has not too many attractions, so we just stayed there for one night. But still, it has a few nice spots that we can recommend you to visit.
Kandy lake
Located in the city center, this is my favorite place in Kandy. You can just walk around the lake and you will be able to see lots of birds, ducks, lizards (I saw one of the biggest I’ve ever seen, just check the pictures in the gallery).

In the middle of the lake, there is a small island where the king used to have a harem and was later used to guard the ammunition.
TIP: We really recommend you to visit the city by foot, everything is close to the lake. From there you can visit another place you can’t miss: The temple of the Tooth.

Temple of the Tooth: Sri Dalada Maligawa
The temple of the Tooth of Buddha is one of the “must-see” in your visit to the city. It is the sanctuary where it’s being kept one of the most important symbols in the Buddhism: the left tooth of Buddha, of 2,5 cm. At 18h you can enjoy a traditional show inside the enclosure (Entrance fee=1000 LKR).
Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue
I had no time to go visit this giant Buddha because I just stayed one day in the city and I like to walk through the lake surroundings, but you can go there for a nice view of the city. It should be a 15-20 minutes hike to the top and the entrance fee is 250 LKR.
